Growth Hacking: Our Email Marketing Tips and Tricks

Hi, everyone! At Cyberimpact, our marketing team has long used marketing techniques inspired by growth hacking.

We define growth hacking as a set of marketing processes used by companies, like Cyberimpact, that aim for exponential growth. You work by trial and error and measure all your actions to optimize your efforts.

Growth hackers agree: email works very well when it’s done right. It’s said that every dollar invested in email marketing returns $38.

So where do you start? Here are a few recommendations that could apply to you...

1. Ask for email addresses

First, do you systematically ask your visitors (in person or online) for their email addresses?

Ask for them in exchange for a perk, such as an instant discount coupon, access to relevant content, a secret offer, insider information, etc. In short, be creative in how you ask.

2. Encourage sharing and comments

Inviting your readers to share your content with their friends is a great way to create buzz. So set up and enable sharing tools, not only in your emails but also on all your landing pages.

ShareThis — have you heard of it?

3. Use @ and #

When you share your content on social media, mention @therelevantpeople and use appropriate #hashtags. This will help your posts spread and gain some virality.

4. Ask for feedback on Pragmatic Entrepreneurs

A recent discovery, Forum.pragmaticentrepreneurs.com lets you get feedback on your ideas.

There are even discussions in French.

5. Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday?

In general, the best days to send an email are:

a. Tuesday for a product launch.

b. Thursday for restaurant menus and other social activities

c. Saturday or Sunday are great for sending older (in-depth) articles

d. Saturday morning can be a good time to send in-store promotions (people mostly shop on weekends)

6. Add a pop-up to your website

Yes, many people will tell you they’re annoying. But they still work!

One tip, though: in our experience, it’s best to show the pop-up once the visitor has viewed at least 30 to 40% of the page. The pop-up can be triggered when a visitor scrolls down far enough, stays on a page for a certain amount of time, or is about to leave the page. Experiment to see what works best for you.

One thing is certain: your pop-up must contain an attractive offer for the visitor who sees it. A simple “subscribe to our newsletter” probably isn’t enough. Offering useful, relevant content (like an ebook or a video series, for example) generally works very well.

7. Send recaps of your webinars

Do you host webinars? For many businesses, they’re a great way to generate targeted leads and even sales. At Cyberimpact, we also use webinars to train our new users.

But we too often forget to follow up with people who registered for a webinar. You can send by email:

  • A written summary of the webinar
  • A link to the video recording
  • A PDF version of the presentation
  • An infographic summarizing the presentation

And of course, include a call to action in your follow-up emails.
