Canada’s Anti-Spam Law (Bill C-28)
According to RDI, the CRTC has received nearly 85,000 complaints since Canada’s anti-spam law (Bill C-28) came into force on July 1. It’s clear, then, that the law meets a real need among Canadian consumers and that spam is still a huge problem.
The CRTC lacks resources
Given the sheer number of complaints, the CRTC said it did not have the resources to deal with all of them. According to RDI, Industry Minister James Moore wrote in a letter to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business that, for now, the CRTC will focus on flagrant cases rather than small businesses. This is good news for SMBs, which were rightly worried about the law coming into force. It would therefore be surprising if the CRTC cracked down over the next year on SMBs that can show they have made the necessary efforts to comply.
